Why nature files behave differently from other categories
Every agency already holds enormous numbers of sunsets, mountains, forests and waves. Get the identification right before anything else

Layer three: behaviour, condition and human presence
What is happening, not just what is there. Feeding, nesting, migrating, flowering, eroding, flooding, regrowing after fire. Note the condition of the landscape honestly, because damaged, dry, overgrazed and logged are all in demand. Mark whether there is any human element in frame, since a wilderness search and a hiking search want opposite things.
Layer four: the concept
The idea the image is bought to stand for. Climate change, biodiversity loss, conservation, renewable energy, carbon capture, food security, solitude, wilderness, restoration. This is the layer that turns a landscape into an editorial asset, and it is invisible to any tool looking only at pixels, because a photograph of a healthy forest and a photograph of a carbon sink are the same photograph.
A worked example
Take a photograph of a shallow upland stream running through heather moorland in the Scottish Highlands, taken in late August, with peat visible in the eroded bank and no people in frame.
A weak set reads like a caption on a photo sharing site: stream, water, nature, hills, purple, beautiful, scenery, outdoors, wild, peaceful. Every one of those returns hundreds of thousands of files and none of them describes anything a buyer could not find elsewhere in one click.
A working set answers real briefs: upland stream, burn, heather moorland, Calluna vulgaris, blanket bog, peatland, peat erosion, Scottish Highlands, Scotland, United Kingdom, late summer, August, no people, carbon storage, peatland restoration, water catchment, biodiversity, rewilding, upland management. The caption states the same facts in a sentence, so an editor reading it can confirm the location and the habitat without opening the keyword list.
Nothing in the second set is invented. It is the same photograph described by someone who knows both what is in the frame and who might need it.
Keywords that get nature files rejected or ignored
- Guessed species names. The single most damaging error in the category, and one that agencies act on when buyers report it. Go broader instead of guessing narrower.
- Captive animals described as wild. Several agencies require captive or game farm animals to be disclosed. Presenting a zoo or sanctuary animal as wild is a misrepresentation, not a shortcut, and conservation buyers check.
- Emotional adjectives instead of nouns. Majestic, serene, breathtaking, stunning. They read well and they are searched by almost nobody with a budget.
- Every animal that lives in the region. If the bear is not in the frame, the word bear does not belong in the file. This is keyword spam and it is easy for moderators to spot.
