# Mobile Stock Photography: Selling Phone Images and Getting Metadata Right
Phone cameras stopped being the limiting factor in stock photography a while ago. Sensors are good, resolution comfortably exceeds agency minimums, and the aesthetic that phones naturally produce — immediate, unstaged, close to the moment — aligns with what a lot of buyers currently want.
What has not changed is that mobile workflows fail in different places from camera workflows. The rejections and the lost metadata come from specific, avoidable causes.
## Resolution is not the problem
Most agencies set a minimum somewhere around 4 megapixels. Any recent phone clears that several times over. If your images are being rejected, resolution is almost certainly not why.
## Computational processing is the problem
Phones do a great deal of work between the sensor and the file, and that processing is tuned for a phone screen, not for a reviewer inspecting at 100%.
**Over-sharpening.** Phones apply aggressive sharpening that produces halos along contrast edges. Obvious at full magnification, invisible on the device.
**Noise reduction artifacts.** Heavy NR smooths noise and takes fine detail with it, giving skin and foliage a waxy, plastic quality. This is one of the most common reasons phone images fail review.
**HDR halos.** Multi-exposure blending can leave unnatural glows around high-contrast edges, particularly along horizons and building lines.
**Digital zoom mush.** Anything beyond the optical range is upscaling. It looks acceptable on a phone and falls apart on inspection.
**Low-light smearing.** Night modes stack frames and interpolate aggressively. The result is impressive as a photograph and frequently unusable as a stock file.
### What to do about it
**Shoot RAW where the device supports it.** This bypasses the heaviest processing and hands you control over sharpening and noise reduction — the two things most likely to get you rejected.
**Never use digital zoom.** Move closer, or crop from the full-resolution frame afterwards.
**Prefer good light.** Phones are excellent in decent light and struggle in poor light. This constraint is more binding than on a dedicated camera.
**Review at 100% on a proper screen.** Almost every rejectable defect is invisible on the device that took the photo. This single habit prevents most mobile rejections.
## Metadata gets destroyed in transfer
This catches people constantly and is entirely preventable.
Sharing a photo through a messaging app strips metadata. Some cloud sync paths re-encode files. Certain transfer methods discard EXIF and IPTC entirely. You then have a stripped file, no capture data, and any keywording you did on the phone is gone.
The rule is simple: **transfer originals directly and verify.** Use a direct connection or a transfer method that preserves the original file, then check with a metadata viewer that EXIF and any IPTC fields survived before you build a submission workflow on top of them.
If metadata was lost, do not guess at capture data to fill the gap — inaccurate metadata is worse than absent metadata, particularly for editorial content where dates and locations must be correct.
## Keywording mobile work

## Where phone work performs
Technically, agencies judge the file rather than the device — there is no mobile penalty. Practically, phone images perform best where immediacy and authenticity are the point: lifestyle, food, travel, documentary, social-first content.
